Example of Meeting - The Rock

Start with news sharing time

Do the story of the wise man who built his house on the rock

(you can act it out, read it, or do a sketch
(e.g from Time to Act - ISBN 0 340 24699 5)

Explain the theme for today is Rock.

Give each person a rock to hold and examine.

Discuss how rock is referred to in the Bible a lot, God is our rock, Jesus called Peter a rock, building a house on a rock.

Ask group to discuss how we should be like a rock, or our faith should be like a rock. Did looking and hold a rock give them any new ideas?

Now ask group to think of other meanings of rock.
E.g. seaside rock, a diamond, rock music, move gently to and fro,
Or other phrases with rock in.
E.g. rock bottom, rock the boat, on the rocks

Discuss if Christians should be like any of these meanings of rock.

Tell group they will be able to take the rock home to remind them of what they have discussed and how we should be like rocks. They are also to be given a Prayer Rock Poem (see below) so the rock can remind them to pray.

Optional - decorate the rock with eyes & mouth. Cut out  a square of material to wrap rock in and tie with ribbon. Use ribbon to attach card and then hand out poem to be stuck to card.

Close in prayer

Prayer Rock Poem

I'm your little prayer rock, this is what I do-
Put me on your pillow until your day is through;

Then turn back your covers and climb on into bed-
Whack! Your prayer rock will hit you in the head!

So then you will remember as your busy day through-
To lay down and say your prayers the way you wanted to.

When you finish praying, just dump me on the floor-
I'll stay here all night long, then give you help once more.

When you wake in the morning, Clunk! I'll stub your toe-
You'll remember morning prayers, before you get up and go.

Put me back on your pillow- when your bed is made,
and your clever little prayer rock will continue in your aid.

You know your Heavenly Father cares and loves you so,
He wants you to remember, to talk to HIM you know.

(I'm afraid I can't remember where on the internet I found this)
