House Church Resources
Good resource material for study and worship is
always important for any group. This page just lists some of the
material we've used in the hope it may be of help to you. Most of
this I've bought in the UK so I don't know about the availability
outside the UK. I will keep adding to this page as I get time.
Note - These are just personal ramblings so please accept them as
such.
If anyone has any comments or would like to share suggestions of
resources that have worked for them then please let me know. (see
the contacts page)
Bible Study
We have tended to use a mix and match approach
rather than one specific resource. As we want to look at how the
Bible applies to us today, we've used the following.
Life Application Bible (Tyndale House Publishers/Kingsway
Publications in the UK)
Serendipity Bible (Zondervan Publishing) I've not seen this in the
UK, someone brought me a copy from the States. This has a set of
discussion questions for each section of scripture ranging from
light openers to deeper personal questions.
The Bible Speaks Today (Inter-Varsity Press) This is a series of
study guides.
Worship
I have always believed that you can use humour to
get serious points across, so I like worship material that uses
humour effectively to make a serious point.
For me, the two books that set the standard for how to do this are
Time To Act (ISBN 0 340 24699 5) and Lightning Sketches (ISBN 0 340
26710 0) by Paul Burbridge and Murray Watts (Hodder and Stoughton).
(They have done more since). These are still among my favourite
resource books.
My other favourite is the Er Jesus Yes Peter series from Wild Goose
Publications.
The Wild Goose Resource Group do have a wide range of good material
- write to -
Wild Goose Resource Group, Iona community, Pearce Institute, 840
Govan Road, Glasgow G51 3UU Scotland.
I don't have a great library of religious poetry for use in worship.
However I do like a writer called Ann Weems and can recommend her
books
Reaching For Rainbows (ISBN 0 664 24355 X) and Reaching For Shalom
(ISBN 0 664 25223 0) (Westminster Press).
Resources For Teens
We've used YOYO (You're Only Young Once) from
Scripture Union.
We've also used a book called 201 Great Questions (ISBN 0 86065 991
7) - (NavPress/Kingsway Publications in the UK).
One book we have used a lot is called Theme Games by Lesley
Pinchbeck. It is suitable for a wide age range including teens. They
are games that you can play and then draw lessons from them.
(Scripture Union ISBN 0 86201 841 2).
We've also found school assembly books useful, two examples by Janet
King are 52 Easy-to-use Assemblies (Monarch Books ISBN
1-85424-432-9) and 52 Ideas for Secondary Classroom Assemblies
(Monarch Books ISBN 1-85424-141-9).
For younger children, a series of books we can recommend is called
Instant Art for Bible Worksheets drawn by Arthur Baker and published
by Palm Tree Press. These are books of worksheets relating to Bible
stories which you can legally photocopy to use with your children's
activities. |
