Peacemobile

What is Peacemobile?

Peacemobile is an exciting new way for children to develop peace-making skills and awareness through play. Peacemobile consists of 20 interactive exhibits on the themes of
  • Peace for Me – helping children discover the wonder and beauty within themselves by increasing self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-confidence.
  • Peace for Us - helping children explore and practice cooperation, communication, conflict resolution and respect for others in their daily relationships.
  • Peace for Everybody - helping children to examine the possibilities of others and celebrate the cultural diversity of the human race.
  • Peace for the Planet - helping children to address the need for care and appreciation of our earth.

Performing puppet plays, building houses from Lego, making masks, designing a peace flag, making a ‘No More Litter’ poster: these are just a few of the ways in which the children learn peace-making skills.

A typical Peacemobile session will last between one and two hours. Children move from exhibit to exhibit doing the activities and discussing what they have learnt.

At the beginning of a Peacemobile session each child is given a passport. As each child completes an activity they receive a sticker for their passport. A further sticker is received for discussing the questions related to the activity.

Who? Where? How?

Peacemobile has been designed for use with primary school age children. It is suitable for use in schools, faith-based organizations and community groups. Church groups, for example, might wish to use it for a one-off youth group session, a series of youth groups using a different theme each time, a family day or each morning of a holiday club.

As its name suggests, Peacemobile, is mobile. Exhibits will be brought to the place where it is to be used and set up there. Groups using Peacemobile will be encouraged to invite parents in to participate in the activities with the children and to learn peace-making skills with them.

Exhibits have been designed to be used by up to 4 children at any one time. A large room, or a number of adjoining rooms, will be needed to accommodate all of the exhibits, but many groups may wish to select a smaller number of exhibits to use.

Funding

It has been possible to cover the cost of creating the Peacemobile exhibits thanks to a number of generous donations, particularly from SPi Europe and the Community of Christ British Isles Mission Centre. However funds will be needed to cover the cost of consumables used on each Peacemobile visit, transportation and the general upkeep of the exhibits. It is anticipated that the average cost of a Peacemobile visit will be £1.50 per child plus £15 for transportation. Groups using Peacemobile may wish to make a donation to Peacemobile to help towards covering these costs. Cheques are to be made payable to ‘Peacemobile UK’ and sent to David Waring (charity treasurer).

Facilitators

Groups using Peacemobile will be provided with all the materials they need and a user guide to help them facilitate the session. It is hoped that Peacemobile will be able to provide trained facilitators to help with some Peacemobile sessions. Persons who would like to be on a list of volunteer facilitators who may be contacted regarding their availability to help facilitate a Peacemobile session are asked to contact Andrew Fox.
